Check both contact surfaces
Read the manufacturer’s compatibility guidance for the object and the shelf or tabletop. Porous, unfinished, delicate, recently painted or valuable surfaces may stain or react differently. Test only where the label allows.
Clean and dry first
Dust, oil and moisture reduce contact. Clean surfaces using an appropriate method and let them dry completely. Use the recommended amount of putty rather than a thick visible mound.
Distribute small pieces
For a stable object with a broad base, several small pieces can provide more even support than one large piece. Press and twist gently according to the instructions, then verify that the object sits level.
Respect weight and hazard limits
Museum putty is not a substitute for mechanical anchoring, childproofing or earthquake-rated restraint. Do not rely on it for heavy, overhead, fragile or dangerous items. Keep small pieces away from children and pets.
Remove patiently
Follow the stated removal technique, often a slow twist rather than pulling straight upward. Forcing an object can damage a finish or base. Check the attachment periodically because temperature, dust and movement can affect performance.
