A Careful Guide to Using Museum Putty

Know what putty is—and is not

Reusable mounting putty is generally intended to reduce movement of suitable decorative objects on stable horizontal surfaces. It should not be treated as structural adhesive, wall anchoring, earthquake engineering or a childproofing solution. Heavy, valuable or dangerous objects require an appropriate securing method.

Check both contact surfaces

Stone, unfinished wood, porous ceramics, paper, delicate paint and some coatings can stain or react differently than sealed glass or metal. Read the manufacturer’s compatibility information and test a very small hidden area when possible. Avoid placing putty on a surface when damage would be unacceptable.

Use a modest amount

Clean and dry the surfaces according to their care instructions. Small, evenly spaced pieces can provide stability without creating unnecessary contact. Press the object into position as directed, then test gently. Adding excessive material does not convert putty into a permanent anchor.

Consider heat, sunlight and time

Temperature and prolonged contact can affect texture and residue. Avoid assuming that a placement will remain unchanged indefinitely. Inspect the object periodically, especially after moving furniture, cleaning or seasonal temperature changes.

Remove slowly and carefully

Follow the manufacturer’s removal method. Twisting gently may be safer than pulling straight upward for some objects, but surface type matters. Do not use solvents unless they are approved for both the putty and the finish. Stop if the surface begins to lift or discolor.

Choose another method when needed

Wall-mounted items, tall furniture, electronics and objects that could injure a child or pet need purpose-designed hardware or restraints. Museum putty may complement—not replace—a proper safety plan. Renters should also check property rules before applying any mounting product.

Placement checklist

• The object is lightweight and appropriate for putty.
• Both surfaces are compatible and clean.
• A hidden-area test is acceptable.
• The object cannot create a serious hazard if it moves.
• The placement will be inspected periodically.
• A careful removal plan is understood.
